For this analysis, the workplace is a correctional facility. Most of the inmates are exposed to levels of incarceration that does not fit their risks and needs due to the problems linked to work systems and service systems. As such, there is need to seek solutions through analyzing the systems and the classification systems used in sorting inmates. Although there are many competing priorities in a prison, the effectiveness of a facility is determined by its ability to promote the rehabilitation of offenders as they are prepared for re-entry in to their communities (National Commission on Correctional Health Care, 2015). For this purposes, work systems analysis is premised on upgrading the organizational interventions and approaches used in assessment of prisoners at the time of admission in to prison. Effective utilization of emerging technologies in assessing the mental conditions of prisoners and their social aspects can promote reformation.
There is also a pressing need for the conducting inmate evaluations, rigorous interviews, thorough research and strengthening of referral systems for inanimate to be provide with psychological as well as social assistance to meet their respective needs. Currently, the facility has no sufficient mechanisms that help in designing the kind of jobs and programs that various prisoners have to be exposed to depending on their needs. The work systems analysis will help the inmates to access targeted and needs-specific interventions as they spend their time in prison. Prisoners are expected to participate in the processes of making decisions and they require to be allowed to participate in the cognitive behavioral programs voluntary and being evaluated for various risks. However, the information system and service systems are not involving the inmates in the processes. As such, inmates will not have the opportunity of understanding how effective cognitive behavioral programs are to them and the low-risk offenders end up being exposed to high intensity programs while those with mental problems do not receive attention that would help them in dealing with the traumatizing experiences in prison. The established infrastructure, environmental aspects and organizational customer relations strategies are defective that do not give opportunities for participation of the prisoners (National Commission on Correctional Health Care, 2015).
These analysis deals with the information system and the service system. Notably, the specific work systems that require improvement are the human and informational aspect of correctional institutions. Essentially, human participants carry out their duties with the help of technology, information as well as other resources used in providing various services to prisoners. In addition, prison staff members conduct and their mastery of operational systems determines how effectively the institution meets its goals to attending to prisoners with specific needs and recommending the best treatment for them. In correctional facilities, an information system devotes its activities and processes to processing various kinds of information such as prisoners’ health records, psychological profiles and other status reports used for the purposes of decision making. It utilizes activities such as capturing the information, facilitating its storage, transmission, retrieval, display, and manipulation (Dennis, Wixom & Tegarden, 2015).
Within a correctional facility, human participants, mental health specialists in this matter, who are assigned to carry out pertinent duties, control information systems. On its part, a service system is responsible in the production of services that meet the needs of inmates. In a prison setting, service systems requires the direct participation of inmates in order to enhance the co-production of essential services.
All the processes and activities in the work system are ineffective because there is no sufficient consultation and provision of education to prisoners regarding their needs and the benefits of the available intervention programs. Currently, there are no steps to be followed by the prisoners as they figure out what best fits them or what is their levels of involvement. The work system participants only have requisite knowledge on how to use information technology for conduct assessments and designs treatment paradigms. A serious skills, judgment and experience gap exists among the human participants. Technology is not increasingly being applied for communication, information processing, coordination of organizational activities and in the making of decisions (National Commission on Correctional Health Care, 2015).
Environmental factors such as prison culture, technical aspects, and the demographic characteristics of prisoners seriously impede service delivery. Other Organizational dimensions of the environment including stakeholders, procedures and policies cause delays hence affecting operational effectiveness and efficiency in service delivery. These factors have both indirect and a direct impact on the organizational objectives, performance results as well as aspiration levels (Dennis, Wixom & Tegarden, 2015). To increase inmate safety, rehabilitation and involvement in service delivery, there is a need for the introduction of technological tools to supplements the work of the human component in the correctional institution.
From the above discussion, the use of work analysis methods have the potential of contributing towards inmate safety and rehabilitation since their focus is on systems. They provide clear principles and approaches that can be used for system analysis whose findings can be adopted by prison staff in analyzing their facilities. Implementation of work system analysis recommendations would promote the application of viable interventions and improve reformation processes. Work system analysis develops insights into how the system performs and the nature of the interaction among the various elements within the system. This understanding promotes the design and redesign to best meet the organizational objectives and promote the enhancement of the functioning of all the components in the system (Dennis, Wixom & Tegarden, 2015). Overall, the human resource is a major factor when improving the work systems within a correctional facility.
