Issues surrounding undocumented workers have generated intense debates across different platforms (Query, 2006). The rise in the numbers of undocumented workers across the globe has been accelerated by the increase in the number of immigrants in different countries. Apparently, one of the most controversial issue generated by these undocumented workers is their pay and compensation. Query (2006) indicates that safety issues are also very crucial issues surrounding the undocumented workers and their compensation. Some of these aspects are aligned along individual and collective facets of human life. Provision of compensation to undocumented workers initiates many political, ethical and economic progressions.
The level of ethics or moral standard surrounding the issue of compensation to undocumented workers is very crucial in the society today (Carroll, 2007). The most critical part of the aspect is defined along justice and rights. Undocumented workers are employees just like the other legal workers. All countries have rules and regulations that govern their employment and working endeavors (Carroll, 2007). This makes it difficult to accept that aliens under whichever circumstances have the rights to work in places where they are not documented.
Stilwell et al (2003) indicates that compensation for the undocumented workers, especially medical practitioners, causes increase in human resource flow from developing countries and thus causing lack of human resource in third world countries. These workers have qualification in their areas of specialization just like the legal workers (Stilwell et al, 2003). These workers are readily available sin the job market. This has made most of the employees to prefer their services because they are very cheap. This has brought an unfair orientation in the recruitment processes in many organizations. This is because these people provide their services at very low compensation unlike the legal workers. Most of the employees prefer their services because they are subject to exploitation. This is because these people do not have the rights to demand for any privileges (Query, 2006).
According to Query (2006), illegal immigration is one of the most sensitive issue in the current political environment regarding to public policy. Compensation of undocumented workers is a very controversial issue. As a result, it has provided a platform on which various controversies have been established. Some of these include arguments between the government law courts and civil rights organizations. Some of the areas of contention regarding this compensation include discrimination of workers. Other areas that present struggles include underpayment and unfair treatment. Governments restrict organizations from employing undocumented (Stilwell et al, 2003).
Brown, Hotchkiss, & Quispe-Agnoli (2013) contend that there is also a struggle for dominance in the issue between various parties. Legal workers and illegal workers are also characterized by controversy in most of their endeavors. Undocumented workers present themselves in the job market with very low compensation demands and thus tempting the employers to prefer them for employment of the legal workers. The rift and struggle between civil rights organizations and the governments is also evident on the compensation issue. These organizations demand for recognition of these workers because they are employees just like any other (Brown, Hotchkiss, & Quispe-Agnoli, 2013). They also advocate for standardization of the salaries in order to reflect fairness. The governments on the other hand insists that these people work illegally and do not have any right or entitlement to any compensation.
Compensation of undocumented workers presents serious issues in the developing countries (Carroll, 2007). This is because it makes most of their workforce to alienate themselves in the developed countries in order to get better payment. This is evident in the behavior of health workers in various countries. The motivation for better pay in other countries forces them to force their way into the developed countries whether legally or illegally. This contributes to a drop of standards in the poor countries and makes the situation worse. This also aids to the growth of the economic development gap between the rich and poor countries (Stilwell et al, 2003). Brown, Hotchkiss, & Quispe-Agnoli (2013) also conclude that firms that have undocumented workers have a high competitive advantage that the other firms that do not.
In conclusion, compensation of undocumented workers is an issue that has been subjected to constant discussions over the years (Query, 2006). This is because of the social-economics and political concerns that come up as a result of the issue. At the center of the controversy is the justification that is tied to the compensation of the undocumented workers. This debate is accelerated by the dynamics that govern various countries and organizations. Therefore, economic, ethical and political issues are critical to the issues that are related to compensation of undocumented workers.
