Introduction
During the Conservative Counterrevolution in the 1980s, the United States experienced a plethora of changes especially while Ronald Reagan and G.W Bush were in presidency. This part of American history is widely known for the passage of the Civil Liberties Act due to the treatment of Asian Americans within the nation. After the attacks on Pearl Harbor from Japan in the 1940s, Asians within the nation were treated in an ill manner due to discrimination tendencies from people all over the globe. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the specific implications of the Conservative Counterrevolution and how Asian American communities were targeted in a specific manner.
Executive Order of 9066
As seen in the year 1980, the federal commission of the United States began to review the facts and figures of the Executive Order of 9066. This methodology was developed in 1942 under Franklin D. Roosevelt, and there was strict authorization to incarcerate and remove all of the Japanese Americans who were found on the West Coast. While specific Japanese Americans were not mentioned based on their specific names, there was an order to remove over 100,000 Japanese Americans during this time period. Military tactics were created and a plethora of strategists allowed for specific facets of mass destruction (Densho Encyclopedia, 2013). However, although this order was enacted in the 1940s, The Japanese American Citizens League began to call for immediate reparations in order to thoroughly investigate the occurrence that took place. In essence, most Asian Americans were severely discriminated against, and there was a type of oppression that took place as well. There were many citizens in the country who did not believe that Asians should live in the United States due to the devastating events that took place many years ago. Since the slew of racism and cultural bias continued, there was a stringent need to re-asses each event that took place during World War I. In most instances, Japanese Americans were permanently imprisoned and there was a lack of respect on a variety of levels.
According to the NCRR hearings, many Japanese Americans were able to speak out during the Conservative Counterrevolution, and it created a notion of emotional implications. For most of the individuals, this was a moment where they were speaking about their experiences in an open manner for the first time, and it created a great deal of anxiety as well as catharsis. There were even witnesses who spoke on the behalf of their parents who have passed away and others who spoke for their children who were too young to remember what took place when the Executive Order of 9066 was enacted. While there were camps set up, one specific participant discussed how her younger sister suffered from mental damage and high anxiety three years after evacuation. There was also a development of asthma simply due to the conditions that were seen among the camp (NCRR, 2014). This proves that unfortunate conditions were granted for many Asian Americans and that there were limited equal rights. Although each human possessed the same innate abilities, this was during a time when discrimination was highly enacted. Most people did not have any choice but to bear with the conditions that were being dealt with. Potential escape would only lead to a plethora of problems that may Asian Americans did not want to face.
The Civil Liberties Act of 1988
Once the negative discriminatory events against Asian Americans were assessed, the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 was enacted. Under the presidency of Ronald Reagan, this was a way to develop a type of formal recognition against the many injustices that were committed against the large community within the nation (Bush, 1992). Through the sponsorship of Representative Norman Mineta, the act was created in order to apologize and recognize everything that took place during one of the detrimental part of the United States’ history. A trust fund was established in order to provide monetary measures to those people who were hurt in an unjust way and there was also a creation of public education funds to ensure that the time period would not be forgotten in any way (Anti-Defamation League, 2013).
100,000 Japanese Americans were forced from their homes in many states throughout the country and lived in internment camps spread throughout the nation. The conditions were horrendous, and many people suffered from grave illnesses due the conditions. Most Japanese-Americans lost their possessions and their savings. Additionally, the concept of freedom was taken away (Wright, 2014).
Furthermore, it should be known that there were payments of redress totaling approximately $20,000 that were granted to 60,000 Japanese Americans who suffered from the internment that took place in the 1940s. According to the Anti-Defamation League, it is of utmost importance to continue with educational capabilities in order to teach people about the lack of justice that took place among Asian-American communities.
Conclusion
Unfortunately, the terrible treatment faced by Asian Americans is a portion of U.S history that will continue to be taught about so that the injustices can be remembered accordingly. The Civil Liberties Act is a significant part of the time period since it allowed liberties to be granted in a fair manner. In essence, it shows sincerity of the American government because there were legitimate apologies and monetary inclusions that were offered in order to provide powerful actions towards the mistreatment as discussed before. Although a maximum amount of money will never be able to compensate for the terrible ways that the Asian Americans were treated, there was an allowance for some type of triumph. The establishment of the Executive Order of 9066 itself was an extremely negative tactic that forced an array of individuals out of their homes and into poor concentration camps. While there are some people who still believe that this may be deemed as a governmental phenomenon of both Ronald Regan and G.W Bush, there is a need to understand the repercussions of the Conservative Counterrevolution. While the Civil Liberties Act was enacted, there will always be a solid infrastructure of remembrance regarding the occurrences that took place where Asian Americans were the targets.
