This assignment turned out to be more challenging than I anticipated. I cannot imagine my life even without one sense, let alone four senses. After carefully considering the variety of rich experiences each sense enables me to enjoy, I believe I will mostly likely choose the sense of sight if I were forced to live with only one sense. Life without other senses would be quite dull but a life without the sense of sight will be akin to being locked in a dark room for the rest of your life. I have primarily chosen the sense of sight because it allows me to see the people I love or care about, I depend on it for learning more than any other sense, and it allows me to appreciate the beauty of the world.
I would choose the sense of sight because I do not want to forget how the people I love or care about look like. I want to grow with these people and observe the evolution of their appearance over time. When my loved ones or friends have families, I want to see the beautiful faces of the next generation. This assignment has made me realized that the faces of our loved ones are huge part of their identity in our minds. I can only imagine that many blind individuals have a deep yearning to know how their loved ones look like. I may not hear what my loved ones and friends may say to me but I can rely on alternative communication methods such as sign language and written communication. Most importantly, I will never miss the facial gestures on their faces including their beautiful smiles.
I have a deep passion for learning, and losing the sense of sign will hamper my ability to learn more than any other sense of sight. The sense of sight allows me to read books on a variety of subject matters. Granted it is possible to read books through other senses, too such as Braille language using sense of touch or listening to audiobooks through sense of hearing. However, it is important to realize that the number of Braille and audio books significantly lags behind the number of traditional books. The sense of sight also enables me to travel the world and engage in visual form of learning. Most importantly, the sense of sight allows me to understand pictures that are often worth thousands of words.
Our world is a beautiful place. The beautiful places on this planet earth surpass even the heavens of our fantasies. In addition, the creativity of human beings knows no bounds, and they have only added to the beauty of their world through their creations including architecture and digital and non-digital technologies. The sense of sight does not only allow me to experience the current beauty of our world but will also enable me to experience the magical world human beings will create over the next few decades.
All five of our senses enrich our lives in countless ways. However, I would choose the sense of sight if I were forced to live with only one sense. The sense of sight allows me to see the faces of people I care about. The sense of sight enhances my ability to acquire new knowledge more than any other sight. Last but not least, the sense of sight allows me to appreciate the beauty of this world. It would be quite depressing to not have the sense of sight, and spend the rest of life as if one has been imprisoned in a dark room for lifetime.
