Over the decades, the interpretation and application of international law is continually evolving. This is because there are shifting norms, standards and regulations which are impacting the way various parties react. Recently, these transformations have become more pronounced. As the world, has come together, to establish guidelines for: nation states, multinational organizations, nonprofits / charities and individuals. The result is that these transformations have led to more people applying international law differently.

For instance, the use and enforcement of war crimes were the direct result of the atrocities committed by Nazis and Japanese against innocent civilians during World War II. In the beginning, this served as a foundation for preventing these kinds of situations in the future. However, the reality is; that narrower or broader interpretations can have an impact on the way these guidelines are applied. This is leading to different views, about those actions which violate international law and the way specific guidelines are enforced. (Ginsburgs, 1990)

My primary goals are to make positive contributions in these areas. This will occur through sharing my insights about the application and interpretation of these standards. To achieve these objectives, I will utilize my education as a background to comprehend the way they will influence different international actors in the process. This is based upon a passion I have for learning about the subject and expanding my horizons.

In the future, I plan to work with the UN to offer legal opinions about the way various standards are applied and how they can influence different actors. This will be accomplished through providing a basic foundation of support to UN agencies. They have a critical mission in dealing with key challenges and applying international law in a way that takes into consideration numerous interests. (Frinman, 2010) (Doria, 2009)

For example, whenever there is a refugee crisis, these agencies are having trouble dealing with the large number of people and the severity of the situation causing it. Many are unsure about how they can maintain a balance between these interests and limit any negative effects. The problem is that these challenges could make the situation worse, by failing to understand what is happening and providing the best interpretations of international law. Once this takes place, is the point a crisis can spiral out of control with UN unable to effectively respond. This is what happens during wars, as the fighting will lead to an influx of refugees. (Frinman, 2010) (Doria, 2009)

In these situations, they have to determine who is the most in need of help, with the limited amounts of resources available. This means that certain groups of people will be ignored, as the staff cannot assist everyone. In these situations, legal counsel will provide interpretations of international law and discuss how they influence the actions taken by the agency. This narrows their focus and ensures that they can meet critical objectives. (Frinman, 2010) (Doria, 2009)

I want to provide a better understanding of international law and the mechanisms available. This will be achieved by studying at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, Switzerland. I will focus mainly on international law and the way it can be applied to deal with critical challenges throughout the Middle East. The education and training I receive will provide another avenue. To make a difference in alleviating, many of the challenges impacting those who are in the region. (Frinman, 2010) (Doria, 2009)

For example, the Arab Israeli crisis is a long standing dispute which negatively impacts both sides. This is because the Israelis claim that they have the right to defend themselves at any cost. During the process of achieving these objectives, they are focused on protecting their own interests at the expense of innocent civilians. In some cases, they will become actively involved in those areas. That is questionable, when it comes to human rights and the basic UN accords they have agreed to. (Frinman, 2010) (Doria, 2009)

However, many Arabs are known for their brutality. That is directed at people who do not share their religious beliefs. This is problematic, as these challenges are negatively affecting all of the different sides in the conflict. These issues directly related to international law and the contrasting interpretations of it. (Frinman, 2010) (Doria, 2009)

The education that I will receive from the Graduate Institute is one way gaining more insights about these concepts and how it is applied on the world stage. I can use this with my experience, to gain greater perspectives of each side and show how these interpretations can change the actions of everyone. These shifts will help UN agencies, to play a neutral role in the process of dealing with critical challenges. This is achieved by having someone, who understands key issues and can effectively troubleshoot specific situations. (Frinman, 2010) (Doria, 2009)

Clearly, the international situation is becoming increasingly complicated. This is from conflicting interpretations about international law and how it is applied. The result is that each side will claim how they are following the highest ethical practices in the process. Yet, others will cite the negative impact of these actions on specific groups of people and nation states. To deal with these kinds of issues, requires taking a different approach. I can help by understanding each side and provide interpretations to assist in alleviating tensions. At the UN, the education I receive from Graduate Institute; can enable me to work as a liaison in reducing these challenges.
