Being healthy is more than being free from illness; it includes emotional health and a healthy frame of mind. It is important to feel good about myself and have a healthy self-image and self-esteem. Towards this goal, my personal sustainability plan involves healthy diet, active lifestyle, healthy choices, as well as activities that strengthen my body’ immune system and defense against diseases.
Diet
The first step in my health plan is healthy diets. Being conscious of each food group is important – fats, carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oils. Being conscious of these groups means that I can be careful to eat food from all the groups and so maintain a balanced diet. Fruits and vegetables are very important for health as they provide important vitamins and minerals that the body needs. They also provide fibers that are important for healthy movement of food through the digestive track. My diet will include lean proteins like beans, legumes, chicken as well as whole grains. Healthy eating also includes avoiding foods that are rich in added sugars, too much salt and saturated fat. My sustainability plan includes avoiding fast foods as much as possible and eating home-cooked food more.
Healthy Weight
Maintaining a healthy weight is important. Weight gain or a state of being overweight is associated with several disease conditions. It is therefore, important to monitor my weight regularly and regulate my weight. This will include avoiding foods and behaviors that promote unhealthy weight gain, while engaging in activities that regulate metabolism and weight gain in a healthy manner.
Exercise
Physical exercise is important towards maintaining healthy weight and healthy functioning of the organs of the body. Physical exercise improves circulation and promotes a good mental health status, as well. 30 minutes of physical activity is important on a daily basis. This can include activities such as walking, jogging, or working out at the gym.
Healthy Lifestyle Choices
Smoking is an activity that damages the lungs and causes many diseases; I do not smoke and do not intend to adopt the habit. It is also important to avoid breathing in secondhand smoke as it is equally as harmful to health as smoking itself. Other healthy lifestyle choices include avoiding drugs and other addictive substances as well as people that use them. Alcoholic drinks will also be avoided; healthy beverages and natural drinks and juices will be consumed instead.
Avoid Stress
Mental health is very important. Stress can be harmful to both emotional and physical health. It is important to identify the things that stress me and how to take care of them in a positive way. My health plan includes avoiding being overworked as much as possible, making time for rest and relaxation as well as getting seven hours of sleep every night. Activities to control stress will include going for walks, meditation, doing breathing exercises and praying. Furthermore, it is important to surround myself with positive people, people who can support me as well as people that I too can support where necessary. It is important to be engaged in relationships that are mutually respectful, beneficial and positive.
Health Examination
Annual physical examinations and check-ups are also important as a preventive health measure. In addition to self-examination where possible, annual physician office visit for physical examinations will be done.
Conclusion
The premise for my personal sustainability plan is that prevention of ill-health and maintaining good health is more beneficial and sustainable as against curative processes. Eating healthy diets, exercise, avoiding harmful habits and harmful environments, dealing with stress (identifying, avoiding and eliminating stressors) are central to my health plan.
