The discussion on “Muslim American Women on Campus,” explains that the book has numerous intentions which are geared at the different viewpoints and lifestyles of the various readers. For example, there are sections of the discussion related to how the Muslim Women can maintain their traditions and faith while also integrating into the American college campus environments. There are sections of the discussion which discuss the understanding of the non Muslim students and how this level of understanding of the Muslim culture would improve the environment for both the Muslim women and the non Muslim students. This section is important as many people tend to separate ethnic and religious backgrounds from citizenship of the United States. This separation causes many issues among the different faiths.

In regards to the Islamic faith, this discussion emphasizes that it is perfectly acceptable in America to have both pride in one’s citizenship as well as loyalty to their faith and ethnic background. The difference is, of course, the stereotypes that are often placed on Muslim American students. In order to combat these elements of stigmas, it is important to understand that America is based on the differences among the citizens. It is not critical for an individual to turn away from their faith nor to blend in with American culture. It is more important to hold on to one’s faith without hiding their beliefs. When possible, it is important to explain the beliefs so that the other students will understand rather than question the differences between the two. Playing down the differences do not make them go away.

However, the Islamic faith requires certain actions of the followers which are often not consistent with the life of a student on a college campus. For example, sexual activity is not permissable nor is dating outside of the faith. Therefore, many Muslim American women attempt to hide this requirement by stating that they do not want to date. Additionally, alcohol consumption is not allowed and the women often state that they don’t drink rather than they can’t. This shows that, although Islam is a religion which has very distinct requirements on Muslims, these requirements often force the Muslim women to be untruthful as they attempt to fit into a specific culture. The Muslim leaders should give better support to the women on campuses in order to prevent these areas of falsification.
