At first, the story seems to be very simple and appealing to a broad range of audience of all age. Even though fairytales are created to create children’s attention first, the case of Little Snow White demonstrates how a simple story may be catching so that people of different age groups will become its fans.

Initially, Brothers Grimm had written the story in 1812. Later on, it was published in their edition “Grimms’ Fairy Tales” under the number 53 in the collection. The language of the initial fairy tale was German, and it was called “Sneewitchen.” The authors revised the piece few decades later after the initial publication. It was 1854 when the final revision of the piece took place.

The plot of the story in different cultures includes a common set of featuring elements. These are magic mirror, the poisoned apple, the glass coffin. The main characters always include a queen that shall be surrounded by seven dwarfs. In the major part, that is why the common name of the story is Snow White and Seven Dwarfs.

While interpreting Little Snow White one shall remember that the authors Brothers Grimm were also folklorists who were in a close contact with folklorists from other countries. In that context, an interesting fact comes up. In the first edition of the fairy tale, Brothers Grimm focused on Snow White’s jealous mother. Also, some of the tasks were transformed in the first edition, too. For instance, instead of ordering a servant to take her to the woods, she was asked to go for flower-gathering and then appeared abandoned. The further change with the appeal to step-mother may be interpreted as the didactic purpose of the fairy tale. In other words, the story may be construed as a demonstrative case of communications between a mother and a child, or a perception of the relations between a stepmother and children.

Over the decades, Little Snow White was modernized and adjusted to new cultural demands. For instance, in the course of screening Disney gave names to all dwarfs. In order to raise audience’s attention during the screening, Snow White was singing. In addition, Snow White appears to be as much more mature character that it was initially described in Brothers Grimm book. Moreover, dwarfs are given rather different roles. For instance, instead of vandalizing the house, they clean it. In many other cases of cinematography, the role of dwarfs and Snow White varies. As for me, the most interesting adaptation of the fairy tale results in the representation of dwarfs as warriors. Also, an interesting example of the seven dwarfs was adjusted in Albanian culture where they are represented as robbers.

In general, the piece is famous for its cultural codes and the didactic function. Also, the fact of numerous interpretations in many European culture and adaptation of the movie in the big film-making studios such as Disney has strongly influenced the spread of the fairy tale all around the world. Thus, without any doubts, Little Snow White shall be considered as one of the world greatest masterpieces in folklore.
