Dear Senator Last Name,
I am writing to you today to ask that you help to ensure the safety of nurses by supporting The Nurse and Health Care Worker Protection Act, H.R. 4266/S.2408. As a nurse working to support the health of American patients this legislation is of critical importance to me, my colleagues and my family who depends on me.
This bill will ensure that safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM) is implemented in healthcare contexts across the country. SPHM ensures that in the manual work of lifting and repositioning patients nurses and healthcare workers no longer suffer from pain, injuries and loss of capacity due to chronic musculoskeletal disorders which develop because of the lack of needed supports in doing these tasks (ANA, n.d.). SPHM is needed in order to reduce the injuries to nurses, but also to reduce costs to the system and the costs of the reduction of nurses caused by these injuries. By eliminating this task for nurses through mandating the purchase of appropriate equipment as well as training on usage within two years of the passage of this legislation nurses will better be able to support the health and healing of patients without putting themselves in danger (ANA, n.d.). The proposed solution put forward by this bill has been proven to reduce injuries to nurses as well as to raise the standard of care for patients, and this has long term cost benefits to the healthcare system in addition to ensuring the health and safety of healthcare workers (Theis & Finkelstein, 2014).
I appreciate your consideration, and I hope that you will support the Nurse and Health Care Worker Protection Act in order to make it safer for nurses to support patient health without risking their own health.
Sincerely,
Name
