As a leader, an individual should be have the skill of controlling one’s feelings, as well as that of others. Besides, emotional intelligence (EI) is the capability to manage emotions and guide other people’s ways of thinking and behavior. EI is one of the essential aspects in health care settings, as it improves multi-tasking, delegating, problems solving, and patient-family centered care. Researchers have introduced different approaches to the relationship between improved health care and emotional intelligence. Therefore, examining one’s emotional intelligence provides an opportunity to discover strength and overcome weaknesses.
One of the methods that people use in measuring emotional intelligence is self-assessment on different EI aspects. Self-assessment is a standard process for measuring aspects such as people’s personality characters and anxiety. In my opinion, I undertook an EI test, as I scored slightly above the average range. According to Daniel Goleman, EI assessment includes the examination of aspects that build emotional intelligence (Goleman, Boyatzis & McKee, 2013). Goleman divided emotional intelligence into two categories that are personal competencies and social skills. Personal abilities encompass self-awareness, motivation, and self-regulation, while interpersonal skills consist aspects like team abilities, influence, conflict management, communication, building bonds, empathy, and collaboration. Regarding my assessments in these areas, the report highlights weaknesses in self-regulation, conflicts management, and building bonds. However, the results showed strengths in self-awareness, empathy, and influence (Goleman, Boyatzis & McKee, 2013). Thus, I require adopting a sound strategy to amend the weak points and develop my strengths further.
I have researched strategies to enhance my EI. One of these approaches includes paying attention to my emotions to discover the essential distinctions that help in making one sensitive to own and other people’s feelings (Walton, 2016). The second approach concerns the practicing empathy. This involves the capacity to understand and share emotions or feelings of others. The strategy helps people to establish deeper connections with others by being thoughtful and considerate on how to engage them with emotional dexterity (Oh, Lee & Ko, 2016). The final approach regards sharpening my social skills through practicing ways of listening, engaging in conversations, negotiating, and collaborating. The strategies will assist in the improvement of my EI (Walton, 2016). In the workplace settings, managers with low EI are often not open to influence and refrain from conversions with their followers. In such scenarios, I seek support from team members and address the issue with human resources manager or any other senior official in the firm. At times, discussing with such leaders on having low emotional intelligence could help in resolving problems that might occur between the leader and the follower.
Studies indicate that people with a higher EI in the healthcare settings find it easier to develop and sustain interpersonal relationships and fit in a wide range of group situations (Oh, Lee & Ko, 2016). Additionally, such people have enhanced understanding of own psychological state that could include efficient management of stress, thus, less likelihood to suffer from consequences of depression (Oh, Lee & Ko, 2016). Nevertheless, academic reports show no correlations between EI and Intelligence Quotient (IQ). Therefore, clever people may not show abilities to address own or other people’s emotions and vice versa.
Emotional intelligence examinations open opportunities for people to learn and improve their relationships with others. Individuals with low EI might have difficulties when working in groups, thus, the need to improve EI. Adopting appropriate strategies includes paying attention to one’s and other’s emotions and sharpening social skills to assist the development of EI. A person could discuss with leaders on their weaknesses of low emotional intelligence to enhance good relations at the workplace. Besides, seeking assistance from workmates on the issue could be a potential remedy.
