Doing anything for the first time is always accompanied with a feeling of anxiety and nerviness and the first day of High School is no exception. The following article chronologically follows the three years I spent at High School, from the first day to my graduation party.
On the first day I remember the large crowd of new students of who I knew a handful looking fearful as we walked through the gates of the school into our new school. For the first few weeks of the new year as me and my fellow students learned the layout of the High School and became familiar with the teachers and subjects. All new students were given a handbook with a timetable and small map inside to help new students. One of the most interesting classes was science that was taken by Mr Goodard who liked practical experiments. His classroom was more like a laboratory will a large old blackboard at one end of the room, desks all down the center, and a strange assortment of test tubes, Bunson burners and other equipment stacked along all sides of the walls. We would often mix strange chemicals, use acids in experiments and see different reactions that produced strange smells.
At the start of the second year I remember feeling far more settled. I was doing well in my subjects and had a close group of friends in the school. I remember on the first day back at school seeing the nervous looking new first year students and recalled how scared I had been on my first day, it seemed so silly now. The first half of the second year of high school was much the same as the first year, the lessons continued and the close group of friends I had gotten to know in the previous year. IT was not until after the Christmas break that the subjects and lessons became far more serious as we prepared for the final year. During the year we had a new student join called Sara who sat next to me in English. The teacher was strict but over the course of the year we often passed notes to each other and giggled at one another jokes.
At the start of the third year of high school the whole year had an assembly where a number of teachers talked to us about the importance of this final year and the exams that would take place at the end of the year. I remember looking around the packed assembly hall, first the front where the line of teachers stood taking to the students and then around the hall to see the mix of faces I had gotten to know so well over the last two years. Sitting in the silent exam halls was a nervous experience but the whole affair was soon over. With all the exams over it was time for the end of year graduation party which was going to be held in the assembly hall and following tradition, each person was expected to take a date. I plucked up the courage and asked Sara if she would go with me. The graduation party was a great success with the hall decorated from one end to the other with music and food on tables down each side. It was also a sad day as our high school years had come to an end.
To conclude, my experiences at High School over three years represented some of the best times of my life where I got to meet a number of close friends and at the same time thoroughly enjoyed my learning experience.
