I have always dreamt of working hard in school, attain good grades, join college and succeed in life. According to the advice and knowledge I acquire from my parents and also the teachers, the key to success is all about working hard and concentrating in studies to achieve good grades. However, while in high school, I have had a challenge handling a slight ADHD problem. I recall a time when my concentration was poor and had difficulties focusing on a single particular task. The problem has been bothering me especially in my studies and I realized that it was negatively impacting my studies. I took much time thinking about and focusing on the possible solutions to employ in order to overcome it. I knew it would not be easy since I had to involve the assistance from my tutors and my own effort to overcome.
The ADHD problem first appeared when I was 12 years old. My concentration in my studies began deteriorating and consequently affecting my overall performance in class. I was concerned with the problem because I had always wanted to ensure that I perform well in my academic activities. My objective was to put much effort in my academic studies and I never wanted any distractions in my academic activities. ADHD was a threat in my life especially in my academic performance and concentration. This is because, ADHD affects the brain’s decision making abilities, affecting the attention of the mind and the ability to plan and prioritize different activities.
The biggest and the main important aspect I realized is to learn how to manage my ADHD. I also accepted that this was an issue in life my life which required hard work and commitment to overcome it. After taking much time contemplating, I made a decision to get extra help from my tutors and in addition working hard in my studies. My tutors explained to me that the issue can be successfully managed. My tutors put me through extra counseling for 3 days in a week. They taught me various strategies to employ to overcome the issue such as taking a break when studying and embarking on physical activities.
I learned to make sure my academic materials remained organized by taking 20 minutes in the morning of each day to organize my daily activities. I also learned to organize my class work such as assignments and various academic projects. I took the initiative to follow the mantra of taking 15 to 20 minutes each day to focus on what I had covered each day, what I had understood, and the areas where I needed to concentrate more. My tutors also advised me to put more concentration on my strengths instead of focusing on my challenges. This was to help me in remaining positive and also motivated. In addition, I worked hard by developing a study time table for accommodating all the courses and ensuring that each course especially the challenging ones are allocated enough time to study.
The study schedule also included sometime to engage in physical exercised as recommended by my tutors so as to enhance my concentration and reduce the level of anxiety. Similarly, physical activities were beneficial for the body and for the relaxation of the mind. I also set sometime aside to engage in social activities and academic discussion with my classmates and also to seek extra help from my tutors concerning my academic progress. My commitment was fruitful because I managed to overcome the problem of ADHD and also improve my grades and in addition, I am able to lead a fulfilling and an academically productive life.
