Cultural racism manifests itself in through different ethnic and racial groups in society believe that they are superior to others. Some modern-day examples that are taking place today include individuals who support Black Lives Matter as well as individual Donald Trump supporters. Many of the more ignorant followers embrace the illusion of superiority that they believe they hold over white people, Mexicans, Muslims, etc.
Institutional racism can take place in professional institutions, whether they be affiliated with the government, banks, courts, or academic institutions. For example, a court may rule in opposition of a minority due to their skin color or heritage, regardless of whether or not they were truly guilty of the alleged crime. If people are discriminated in this manner, they may have to spend time in the penal system or face deportation back to their native country.
The problems that a child has outside of school can affect their academic progress, as well as their behavioral and developmental progress. If a child is being abused at home, they may get into more confrontations at school, or may appear timid and afraid of teachers. If their parents do not make them do their homework, they may do poorly in their studies, and may not even care about what they are supposed to be learning at all.
The public tends to look down on welfare recipients since their benefits are funded with public tax dollars. There are common misconceptions that welfare recipients are lazy, exploitive, and uneducated. Naturally, many people are inclined to feel as if they should not be assisting these types of people, even though there is only so much that they can do about it. Because of this, the public tends to treat such recipients with disdain.
Wars serve as an opportunity for women to take over the workforce since the military only drafts men. When working class men are forced to go fight in a war, their positions can be filled by women in order to maintain economic stability. Since this trend has been taking place since the first world war, these opportunities have given women the chance to prove that they are equal in terms of their work abilities.
Some misconceptions about rape is that the victims tend to bring it upon themselves and that the perpetrators can only be held so accountable. While this is almost never the case, it may even be true on a case-by-case basis. Because of this, the public sometimes has a tendency to shame and talk down to victims of rape while trying to justify the actions of the attacker.
The fear of repercussions, their relationship to the attacker, feelings of guilt and shame, and not wanting others to know about the incident are among the most common reasons that rapes will go unreported.
Many Americans have anti-homosexual views due to traditional, religious, and homophobic reason.
Many Americans identify as some form of Christians, which looks down upon homosexuality. Others believe that it is a lifestyle choice that is being forced onto the public, and they are afraid of the times changing in this regard. Until recent decades, open homosexuality was not necessarily embraced.
Some myths about homosexuality include the individual bedroom practices of homosexual people, that they are more perverted than everyday folks, and that they are all infected with diseases. Because of this, some people have a predisposition to think that homosexuality is disgusting and evil, thus causing them to treat members of the LGBT community poorly or indifferently.
Disabled people should be considered a minority group because they do not make up the larger part of the general population. In modern American society, the word “minority” often implies that such a person is in a state of social oppression. Many of these people are the ones who are exempt from certain laws and get special treatment. In this same sense, disabled people can be grouped in with them for the same reason. They can be exempt from paying taxes on disability checks, and special accommodations (hearing impaired assistance, handicapped parking, wheelchair ramps, etc.) are made.
People have negative attitudes about disabled people because they believe that they are inferior and burdensome to society. Depending on the person’s disability, a person may be given strange looks, may be bullied, or given pity treatment by others. Since they are different from the majority of people, they are easier to belittle, similar to other minority groups.
Disabled may come off as a derogatory term since people who can be legally labeled as “disabled” are able to function in society just fine apart from their disability. Many people who qualify for disability benefits only qualify temporarily, and many only qualify due to technicalities. In a sense, “differently abled” may sound like a more politically correct term since it implies that the person has other abilities. However, this can be said for just about everyone, which makes me believe that changing the terminology would be redundant.
Schools have incorporated multiculturalism by creating and celebrating holidays for minority groups (Black History Month, Cinco de Mayo, etc.). Many schools have also stablished their own Anti-Defamation Leagues, LGBT/straight alliance groups, and even transgender bathrooms in some schools. As America has become more open-minded and progressive about how it treats minorities, schools have taken the initiative to teach young people the same principles at an early age so that they will be able to grow up accepting them.
