In today’s society there are a variety of individuals from different cultures and backgrounds. Each person grows up facing unique challenges while developing into adulthood. The situations may be traumatic to the individual where it needs to be mentally processed to grow into a healthy adult. Adults in our society seek out professionals who will aid in their recovery. Psychotherapy plays an important role in this process. Psycho therapist use different therapies to help the client deal with the mental and emotional scars. Several therapeutic modalities include the the Client Centered therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and Gestalt Theory.
There are similar and different interviewing techniquest needed you each therapy. The Rational Emotive Behavior therapy was demonstrated by Ellis and Gloria. The Client Centered Therapy was demonstrated by Rogers and Gloria. The Gestalt therapy was demonstrated by Perl and Gloria. The interview techniques are similar but different as well where each one focuses on the individual but conduct session differently. This is to help the individual return to wellness in his or her emotional and/or mental well-being.
The interview techniques for the Client Centered therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and Gestalt Theory have some similarities. The therapists hope to keep un-healthy and debilitating emotions and behavior to a mininmum. The interviews try to help thier clients to live a healthier and fullfulling life by empowering them. All three therapies recommend accepting the individual for who they are. Substance abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (1999) says “…acceptance and growth, the major themes…are client responsibility.” The client and therapist work twoards a therapeutic goal. In todays’ world the sessions can be set up on the internet, on the telephone or in person. The therapists demonstrate their methods publicly. Also their is a willingness to help people through professional and individual therapy. The process provides the opportunity for the client and the therapist to establish a relationship between them. The relationship grows between the two of them thus establishing a trust. This provides the opportunity for the client to share more and open up, to be honest. The sessions are designed for a one to one interaction between the therapist and the client. The therapist each know and hope that people will change even if they are distrubed. Also, there is a perception that people are self critical when it is unnecessary.
The interview techniques for the Client Centered therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and the Gestalt theory have some differences. The Rational Emotive Behavior or REBT for short, the therapist uses techniques that are different from other modalities. There are three basic steps in this process. The first process is to identify the underlying irrational thought beliefs and patterns. The second process is to challenge the irrational beliefs. The third process is to gain insight and recognize irrational thought patterns. The therapist guides the client by providing a direction during the session. During the interview process the therapist will point out the differences in the clients thought processes. If the therapist hears a negative comment he will interrupt the client to tell him/her how harmful it is other individuals. These individuals have meaningful relationships with him or her and it is harmful to themselves as well. The therapist will assign homework to aid in further discovery of the issue at hand. Individuals are encouraged to change the behaviors that they don’t want by using guided imagery, journaling and meditation. The two of them work together in order to target the behaviors that go along with the problematic thoughts.
In the Person Centered therapy the relationship between the therapist and the client is valued. The therapist allows a client to choose the direction of the session. The therapist needs to understanding, warm and genuine. There are three basic principles that are at the core of the
operation of Person Centered Therapy. The three principles are that the theapist is empathic towards the client. The second principle is that the therapist provides the client with
unconditional regard. The third principle is that the therapist congruent with the client. The therapist respects the client’s way of thinking and relates to him and/or her on an emotional level.
In the Gestalt Theory the interviewer just needs to be present in the moment and accept the client at this moment in time. The interviewer uses creativity when dealing with the clients. It is practiced in the form of experiments and exercise. The exercise can occur throughout the throughout the therapeutic relationship and therapeutic processes .During the session the therapist focuses upon the character of the structure. The interviewer moves toward action not just talking about it. For example if the client is not assertive the therapist may ask him to say something assertive at that moment in time. The interviewer is not focused with the content but the process.
In conclusion the Client Centered therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and the Gestalt theory have similar and different interiewing techniques. Each one is designed to guide the client through a session. The session is designed to aid in the individual’s emotional and mental well being. Whichever theory the therapist chooses to use the client will benefit from it.
The Client Centered therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and the Gestalt theory were created with the client in mind in order to heal themselves.
