It is the mandate of the nurses to care for the patient, their family, and the community at large. As a result, there is an increase in the community-based care which centers on patients and their families. In addition, there is community-focused nursing care which takes the community as the client (Praveen, 2017). The community teaching plan involved teaching the community on the importance of quality of care to the elderly. As a vulnerable group, the aged faces a number of challenges and deserve to receive quality care in their last days (Fooladi, 2015). Since it is a challenge to most people on the appropriate ways of caring for the loving aged the program educates the community on effective and efficient means of doing so.
There were several meeting which were held at the hospital and other conference rooms in the community educating people on the quality of care of the aged. First people were asked what they knew about the aged people and any misinformation was corrected. The education involved the use of PowerPoints, videos, and demonstrations. Visuals and presentation were utilized people get to understand more on what they see rather than read. Also, there were additional materials given and more learning materials. Questions asked by people were answered in the best possible ways. Prior to teaching people were asked to demonstrate how they will handle a situation and based on the answer provided the education were framed in making them understand things better.
The population of the older people is growing, and these are the people who have a higher prevalence of frailty and ill health. Besides this, there is a considerable population of the elderly that are suffering from the long-term conditions such as heart diseases and diabetes to mention but a few. Home-based care is increasing, and this has reduced the length of hospitalization (Joling et al., 2018). However, in ensuring that high quality of care is attained people have to be educated. One way of promoting preventing healthcare is increasing community awareness. With the increased knowledge on the quality of care, a family member will aid the elderly with functionality problems in living at home which is a suitable environment for them since it is less restrictive. Notably, it is to be taken care of by the people one knows than strangers (Fooladi, 2015). Therefore, it is paramount in teaching people with the elderly family members on the importance of adult care, companionship and material care.
It is projected that with the increased number of elderly there will be more pressure on the hospitals. Also, there is increased shortage of a number of a healthcare practitioner. Regardless of hospital striving to provide good care to the elderly most of them prefer staying at home and being taken care of by their loved ones (Praveen, 2017). Prerequisite of ensuring quality care to the patient is met identification of the level of knowledge of the community as they will be responsible for caring to the elderly. The geriatric population faces challenges of health such as accidents, difficult seeing and listening, and mental problems (Praveen, 2017). In this cases, they are not supposed to be taken to the hospital and disposed of, but the family takes full responsibility of caring for them. Markedly, it is only family members that understand them better and are in a good position of helping when educated.
The teaching plan was assessed by comparing the questions and knowledge levels of the community before education and after education. Notably, this was realized by the use of a questionnaire and the feedback of the community on the program. Questions were asked about the understanding of care after the teaching, and there was a remarkable improvement.
Community Response to Teaching
Apprehensively, the community was grateful for teaching as they become more aware of the challenges of the senior people. Markedly, this was shown by their feedback and essential interest in learning. The education program was interactive both for the community and the nurses as new areas were brought to light in the discussion. For instance, the pain and loneliness the elderly feel when they are abandoned. Just like children, they require to be appreciated and shown love.
Significantly, there was realization of the goal of informing the community on the importance of quality care to the aged. People learned about the importance of being more responsible in caring for the elderly. The importance of preventing the elderly from developing complications was noted. One thing can come light was that there is higher health care illiteracy and education has to be easy and comprehensive (Somogyi, Barker, MacLean & Grischkan, 2015). In doing so, there was a need for making sure the teachings were understandable by lay people. In preventing hospitalization and re-hospitalization family members have to learn on the appropriate ways of the caring to the aged. Urgency was one area that was more emphasized by telling people to act timely when they start seeing specific signs and symptoms on a patient without waiting for the crisis to develop.
Despite the success of the program in informing the community, it had its pitfalls that need to be improved for increased understanding of the significance of retaining quality care to the patient. First, nurses will be required to conduct in-depth research on the culture of a community to understand the issues to prevent when teaching people. There are things which can be sensitive to people and get to learn the manner of interact with people will create a cohesion.
