A number of attributes have an impact on the ethical beliefs, sensitivities, intentions, and behaviors of people. An example of such an attribute is age; it is known to influence the behavior of people in various ways. Some studies indicate that elderly persons tend to be good ethical decision makers compared to young people. On the other hand, when it comes to general decisions devoid of ethical concerns, studies show that young people make better decisions. In addition, a person’s level of education influences their decision making in the sense that those considered more educated will always come up with better ethical decisions when compared to the less educated. The moral development of a person is also a major factor because those who reason at higher levels tend to be better ethical decision makers (Ahner, 2007). Therefore, a person’s age, academic experiences, and moral development levels are factors which influence the performance of an individual at the work place. Essentially, this means that an employer, or a hiring team, needs to take these factors into serious consideration when hiring because a workplace is always guided by a given code of ethics.
Icek Arjen’s theory suggests that there is a strong relationship between a person’s beliefs, values, and principles and behavior. The decisions that a person makes in the workplace are strongly influenced by the belief systems that have been instilled in one over a long period. Essentially, this explains why people from Europe behave differently from those in Asia and the United States. A business executive from Asia does not have any issue sharing personal issues with the boss because the Asian culture allows this form of interaction. However, the same behavior would be considered unethical in the European organizational culture.
