San Francisco is one of the most popular places in the Unites States in California. It is a beautiful place where many people have flocked to in recent years, due to its beauty and culture. Thesis: The city of San Francisco is a great place that offers a rich LGBT history, culture, nice weather, and is easy to navigate.
San Francisco is one of the most picturesque and historical places in the United States. The weather is between 65 to 75 degrees all year round. Unlike areas of the Northeastern United States, people who live in San Francisco rarely have to deal with snow, hurricanes, or tornadoes. That makes life much easier. Another thing that makes life easier is San Francisco’s transportation system. For instance, the BART is an affordable subway system that people can use. It is easy to understand and extends to many cities, such as Oakland. One does not even have to own a car or vehicle to get around. The city allows offers car sharing that can save San Francisco citizens some money.
In terms of the LGBT population, San Francisco is the place to be. It is the home of the late Harvey Milk, the first openly gay public official. He served as the city supervisor for San Francisco. Milk helped to get equality for LGBT people by fighting against the Briggs Initiative, an initiative created to try and get LGBT educators fired for being gay. Milk also organized rallies and fought against California’s Proposition 8, a bill that stated that marriage between two people of the same sex should be illegal. Milk worked all his life to make life better for the gay community. That is something that make San Francisco historically strong.
Without Milk, it is highly improbable that many of the gay rights that we have gained today, such as the legalization of same-sex marriage, gay people being able to raise and adopt children, and making sure that LGBT people do not fired from their jobs or get kicked out of their homes. After Milk, many other LGBT advocates emerged and have taken over the LGBT fight. Gay groups such as the Family Equality Council and the Human Rights Campaign have been born due to Milk’s influence (Human Rights Campaign, 2011- 2015).
The Castro district is where many people, especially gay men, could live their lives without fear of being harassed, subjected to hate crimes due to being gay, and being verbally harassed over one’s sexual orientation, and told by conservative religious leaders that being gay is wrong and an abomination to God and that gay people will not inherit the kingdom of heaven. The Castro district still has many gay people living there today, the history of the LGBT population evident by shops, museums, and other stores that sell LGBT literature and artifacts related to the gay community (LGBT basic rights and liberties, 2015).
However, some people feel that San Francisco is not without fault. For instance, the city is located in the state of California, a state that had experiences many earthquakes. These earthquakes can damage everything that people have worked hard to achieve in life. Some people also feel that the cost of living in San Francisco is too high. Yet, in spite of the increased cost of living, the fact that most careers in San Francisco bring in more money makes up for the high cost of living, such as expensive houses and apartments.
As you can see, San Francisco is a great city. The city of San Francisco is a great place that offers a rich LGBT history, culture, weather, and is easy to navigate.
