Tempe, Arizona, also known as Hayden’s Ferry during the early days of Arizona, is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. Tempe is named after the Vale of Tempe in Greece, and is located in the East Valley section of Phoenix, Arizona. Guadalupe borders the west, Scottsdale borders the north, the city of Chandler borders on the south, and the city of Mesa borders on the east. Tempe is the location of the US Airways Group’s corporate headquarters, the home of Arizona State University, and the University of Phoenix.
Tempe is a suburb of the city of Phoenix, and because of this as well as being the home of the Arizona State University, Tempe has a fairly dense, urban developed area in the northern part of the city. Tempe’s development becomes less dense the further south you go, where you can find more single-family homes, strip malls, and small business office locations.
Boise, Idaho and Tempe, Arizona are similar in the fact that they both are college towns, have Arabic restaurants, and are located in the United States. Boise tends to be a quiet town because it is less populated, and there are not many ‘fun’ places to go while Tempe is more populated and busy with plenty of fun things to do, such as the Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, and Monument Valley. Currently, there are no professional sports teams playing in Tempe. However, from 1987 to 2006, the Arizona State University’s Sun Devil’s stadium was host to the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League for 18 seasons (http://www.thesundevils.com). However, this team has now moved to the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale for their football games, but it still maintains their headquarters and training facility in Tempe. The Sun Devil Stadium, which has also hosted the annual Fiesta Bowl until the 2007 game, moved to the new University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale (http://www.thesundevils.com).
If you’re looking for an apartment, the average price in Boise for a one bedroom is more affordable and around $400 a month, while an average one bedroom in Tempe costs about $700 mainly because the cost of living is higher. Of course, this also depends on what side of town you wish to live on and the quality of apartment you are looking for.
There are many free parking places and lots in Boise, but expect to pay for parking in Tempe since taxes are 10% versus 6% in Boise.
