Adolescents are subjected to various challenges in their development because of their physiological and biological orientations. Depression is one of the most common psychosocial issues among the adolescents in the society today. Depression among the adolescents is characterized by high level of stress that is brought about by the engagements they go through in their daily lives. The lifestyles of the adolescents may also be some of the factors that subject these individuals into the depression (Kirchner, 2000). Therefore, management and mitigation of the behaviors related to the depression is elemental towards the management and mitigation of the condition among the affected individuals.
There are various factors that cause high levels of depression among the adolescents. Their behavioral alignments are the common causes of the condition and it is increased by the peer influences. Alcohol and substance abuse are also some of the factors that increase the level of depression among the adolescents. The management of various aspects of their lives can also lead to the depression among the adolescents because most of these individuals usually experience difficulties in managing their expectations against reality (Dopheide, 2006). Therefore, achieving a balance between various aspects of life and managing their emotional dynamics associated with the development are some of the challenges that affect the adolescents and lead to high levels of depression.
Adolescents are the highest group of people that experience depression in the society. Approximately 10% of the adolescents are victims of depression. Before puberty, depression is almost equal between members of both sexual orientations. However, after puberty, the females under depression are twice as much as the males. Approximately 10-20% 0of all youths must experience a depressive episode in their teenage years (Peter, 2004). Depression is one of the psychosocial issues that requires the victims to receive prompt interventions. This is because the depression can escalate into chronic and severe levels that also lead to the attack by other medical conditions among the victims. If not properly managed, roughly 35 to 50% of the victims can attempt suicide.
There are various strategies that can be adopted towards the diagnosis, management and treatment of depression among the adolescents. The most common forms of diagnosis among the victims is through the application of expert tools by the psychiatric professionals. This is important because it can assist in the confirmation of the medical condition before the formulation and application of appropriate interventions. After confirmation of the depression among the adolescents, there are various interventions that can be adopted in the management of the condition (Kirchner, 2000). Some of the interventions that can be used include the use of antidepressants, psychotherapy and other psychosocial interventions. Some of the psychosocial interventions that can be adopted in the management and mitigation of depression among the adolescents includes modifications in the environment and family counseling processes. Follow-up care is also very important among the medical experts. This is because the interventions can be adopted to ensure that there is continuous progression in the improvement of the mental and emotional stability among the victims. The adolescents are subjected to various challenges that may lead to the reoccurrence of the problems if follow ups are not made by the psychiatric challenges.
In order to ensure there is sufficient management in the depression among adolescents, a positive cultural transformation among the victims is essential. This can include a change of behavioral influences that lead to the escalation of the depression and stress (Dopheide, 2006). The culture can include the use of the interventions in the most appropriate manner as recommended by the experts and professionals. This can enhance a strategic improvement of the medical condition to promote a continuous improvement to avoid the development of other chronic conditions and suicide.
