The two short films, “Deep Dive” and “Leadership and the New Science” both focus on the concept of change and chaos and how despite our respective understandings of the natural environment, it will always provide change and something new that scientists can focus (ABC News, 1999). In “Leadership and the New Science”, Dr Margaret Wheatley supports this focus in the line “One of the things I urge people to do with any of these new science ideas is to play with them. I mean these are not prescriptions”(McCarey & Mihal, 2015).
Furthermore, both short films relate changes in the natural environment to human relationships and how they rely on change, innovation and in many respects, chaos. In “Deep Dive”, these themes chaos are directly related to human activity and relationships and how most significantly, we can not inspire innovation and progression without some amount of chaos and change. In the short film, Dave Kelly describes this in the line “If you go into a culture and there’s a bunch of stiffs going around, I can guarantee they’re not likely to invent anything”. This is further metaphorical for the requirement for change in the natural environment also (ABC News, 1999).
The two films closely resonate with current changes that are occurring in a natural environment such as climate change. It makes me question whether climate change has always been inevitable and is the only means by which society can continue to progress further. The idea of chaos can be closely related to conflict in society and whether past conflicts have been completely necessary. It also makes me fearful that we will need to rely on future conflict to inspire change and development.
With respect to healthcare, these two short films focus on the implications of disease and whether changes and chaos in the environment will ultimately result in the occurrence of new diseases which are far more potent than those that have occurred in the past. It highlights the need for human society to develop faster in order to resolve any potential, chaotic diseases which may wipe out society altogether.
