The importance of education in my life towards professional progression cannot be underestimated. The majority of people dream with their professional title or a degree or simply with an occupation since child, however people who reach those dreams are few or almost none. Is reaching a dream as difficult as it seems? I’m going to tell you part of my life, my dreams and goals.
My dream started when I was a child in a dental chair. During my childhood, there were few times that I went to a dental office, but there was one of them that I ‘m never going to forget: my first tooth extraction. This event was the breaking point to start my dream about being a dentist because they could not save my tooth, which was a terrible experience. Since that day, I told to my family that I would like to be a dentist because I wanted to help people. I did not want more people to undergo my suffering experience.
When I finished my high school, my goal continued. Being a dentist was not going to be an easy task and I applied to UNMSM, the best dental school in Peru. This university has more than 60 thousand of applicants every year and they accept only 80 students for Dentistry. This was my first big challenge, and I did it! I can remember my mother’s face when she saw my name in the list and I told her: “Mother, your son is going to be a dentist”. She was overjoyed and cried of happiness. Also, that day I received other news regarding my family’s plan to go to USA. A month later, they traveled and I stayed in Peru. It was a sad day, but I realized that my objective was not complete, now I would like to be close to my family. For this reason my dream changed to being a dentist in USA.
After 6 years of study, I progressed into another level of my career. I was perseverant and diligent, because my north was clear. However, I had only attained half of my goal. While I was waiting for my document of residence, I worked as a general dentist for 7 years. I was in charge of emergencies in a big advanced clinical setting environment where I attended to many patients with tooth pain and that is what inspired my decision to study Endodontics in Peru. Later, the same patients came because of their persistent need to put a crown over the root canal. This also motivated me to go to Brazil to study Cosmetic and restorative dentistry. By the way, when I was studying, I met my wife and we got married and have a happy family.
Further, my experiences in doing root canals, crowns, veneers, bridges and many more medical procedures have subjected to various learning entities. I realize that I need to study more because new techniques like rehabilitation with implants or Temporo mandibular dysfunctions associated with facial pain or sleep disorders are developing and they are being more common in the practice. I would like to complete my goal being a dentist specialist in prosthodontics working in USA. Further, the progressing my education will assist me keep pace with the progressions experienced in the industry as a result of globalization and information systems. The prospects of various players in various aspects of the society are consistently changing with the evolution of various dynamics in the dental medicine industry. The education will heighten the level of my creativity and innovation that is crucial in the development of complex skills to match the current and future prerequisites.
Finally, after 14 years without seeing my family, I got my residency card that gave me the possibility of working and studying simultaneously. It was a new beginning and encouraged me in my professional aspiration because I started working as a dental assistant. I passed some examinations like NBDE 1 and 2, and now I can say that I am ready to continue with my education to reach my goal. My experiences have made me hardworking, confident and determined as an individual in my definitive career objective of becoming a prosthodontics professional. Ultimately, pursuing my postgraduate studies in prosthodontics will promote my interests of becoming the best expert in the world. Getting the chance to advance my education will not only assist me excel academically but will also assist me develop skills for all dimensions of life and enhance a mature approach to reality.
