Timbre, according to Hailstone et al. (2009), is the auditory property for differentiating two sounds with an identical pitch, duration, and intensity (p.2142). The moods, emotions, and feelings evoked by a certain sound are dependent on the timbre of the sound. That is to say, emotions judgment in music is contributed much by the instrumental timbre of the music (Hailstone et al., 2009. P.2143). In the song Naroo (Shake a leg), a traditional song by Aboriginal Dreamtime Song of Australia, there is a happy, celebratory mood evoked by the instrumental accompaniment of the song. The song, therefore, evokes a feeling of happiness because of its timbre. In Avicii’s song “The Nights” there is a good use of timbre that evokes the rock and roll emotions making the song suitable for partying. The timbre of the song evokes liking emotions for the song meant to initiate partying mood. The vocals of the song are right in good harmony with its timbre. Therefore, whenever I listen to the song, I develop a feeling of celebration. The emotions feelings and mood communicated by the song are contained in the timbre of the sound and its vocals.
Everybody uses different timbre to evoke the mood that they intend to create with their message. Different timbres are associated with different emotions. Therefore, whenever a person speaks the mood, emotions, and feelings of his/ her message if often carried in the timbre of his/her voice. The similar wording of a message can communicate different emotions, moods, and feelings depending on the timbre of the voice in which it is conveyed in. thus, in my movement through the week, I have definitely noticed how different timbre of the sounds is used by different people to communicate their intentions.
