There are five important steps in database system life cycle. They include analysis/planning stage, design stage, development stage, implementation stage and maintenance stage (Wernet et al., 2016). In the analysis/planning stage, overall database panning is carried out including the development of the overall layout of the database and data conceptualization. In other words, this is where all pieces of information that are required for the designing of the database are gathered. The next phase is the design stage where details about some of the specific parts and functions are used to select the overall model and structure of the database (Wernet et al., 2016).
In the development stage, different pieces are brought together to make the database complete and operational in readiness for further testing and refinement before implementation. During the implementation phase, the database is provided to the customer and subsequently implemented into the system (Wernet et al., 2016). At this stage, the product is expected to be complete and ready to be rolled out to the users for further deployments (Coronel & Morris, 2016). Lastly, the maintenance phase is fundamentally the stage where changes and updates to the database are made basing on the preferences and needs of the users. Also, routine maintenance of the database that includes further testing, monitoring and refinement are done by conducting further troubleshooting (Coronel & Morris, 2016). Nonetheless, the analysis/planning as well as the design phases are essential steps because they provide the cornerstones of the development stage of the database system life cycle.
One example of how the process of database system life cycle can be applied in a different context will be in choosing a single cloud service provider from multiple options. During the analysis/planning stage, a background research of the company is conducted to evaluate user experiences and overall reviews. In the design stage, further exploration could be conducted to determine if the cloud provider meets the desired business design and expectations. The development phase, the database is completed by merging different pieces together. Implementation stage will involve integration and deployment of the business into the cloud platform. Lastly, the maintenance phase will include monitoring the database to ensure that it has attained the required level of operational balance.
