I am deeply passionate about learning and believe learning comes in all forms. I do not seek formal learning opportunities only but also informal learning opportunities such as talking to people of all ages and from economic and social backgrounds, reading books, travelling, and personal observations and reflections. My commitment to learning has also been shaped by my diverse life experiences. I grew up in a small town in South Korean and later have had the good fortune to live in some of the most cosmopolitan cities in the U.S. Similarly, I have learned a lot about the society through my volunteer experiences such as those at a nursing home where I frequently interacted with the elderly, often those with serious health issues. My desire to have access to tremendous learning opportunities both within and outside classroom also explains why I have decided to apply for transfer at your esteemed academic institution.
I started my undergraduate academic career at SUNY Buffalo which is a highly-ranked public university. While I did enjoy the quality of in-class learning, I had limited growth opportunities outside classroom, which prompted me to transfer to Orange Coast College (Orange Coast) in California. At Orange Coast, I have benefitted from frequent interactions with diverse student body and the strategic location of the college has also given me access to numerous arts & cultural experiences. At your institution, I will enjoy many of the student experiences that attracted me to Orange Coast and some more. I also hope to gain practical work experience at one of the global companies that is part of the university’s strong professional network. Transfer to your university will also enable me to remain in California which leads the country in terms of both economic and social progress.

I would like to emphasize the fact my formal academic career will not end with my undergraduate degree. In fact, my undergraduate degree will serve as a foundation for graduate school. I plan to go to Law School because one of the social issues I am most passionate about is the healthcare rights of some of the most vulnerable members of the society such as the poor and the elderly. My undergraduate background in Biology and my Law degree will equip me with the right skills and knowledge set to advance the state of public and private healthcare in the U.S.

I am grateful for the opportunity to be in the U.S. and want to pay my debt to the country for all the opportunities it has given me, by becoming the voice of the poor and the elderly. During my volunteer experiences at the nursing home, I heard and witnessed many painful things and decided I would use my education and personal resources to improve the state of healthcare in the country. It was an eye-opening revelation that healthcare costs can drive even middle class families to financial bankruptcies and a significant proportion of the U.S. citizens have inadequate understanding of their healthcare rights. As many great people have demonstrated, we should become the change we want to see in the world and it is my dream for every American to have access to affordable and high-quality healthcare.

I am not oblivious to the fact that the legal profession has earned a negative reputation due to frivolous medical lawsuits which might also have helped drive up healthcare costs. I aim to demonstrate the fact legal profession can also play an important role in improving the healthcare rights of vulnerable Americans. I am excited at the prospects of having an enjoyable academic career at your esteemed institution.
