Earlier theatre designs were concentrated on historical areas and outside urban centers due to space availability. The major architectural designs used in the 20th century include those of proscenium, thrust stage, and arena stage. These configurations were designed with limited focus on clarity of live action for the audience, along with little to no incorporation of flexibility on the outside. Nonetheless, the modern theatre designs incorporates a complex and playful architectural designs especially in the construction of auditoriums. New auditoriums show exemplary designs both on the outside and on inside. Modern auditoriums have been incorporated to enhance creatively in an effort to increase the playfulness of cast and for the comfort of audience.

Additionally, stage lighting is another aspect that has become revolutionized in the theatre industry. From the early primitive ways of illumination through use of candles and colored water to the modern massive controlled lighting systems. Furthermore, modern theatre design show an emphasize on lighting by integrating not only colorful pictures, but also graphical properties. The integration of sophisticated lighting systems in theatres follows the fact that the effectiveness of earlier illumination limited the level of creativity that could be employed in a play. The most important aspect of modern staging effects that support creativity has been reinforced by flexible architectural designs that allow customization of stage appearance. An experience of theatre play in both 20th century auditoriums and modern ones shows explicit differences from stage design to sitting arrangement. Whereas previous architectural designs were concentrated on building of circular auditoriums, modern theatres designs have incorporated varied shapes and stylistic designs that ensure free movement of audience. All in all, the development of modern theatres has not only improved the efficiency of cinematic performances, but it has also led to an influx in flexible architectural designs whose adoption is increasing day-in-day-out.
