The history of the church between the 5th century and the fall of Rome is usually referred as the history of Christianity during the middle ages. The period is characterized by many changes regarding beliefs and the struggle for power. To understand more, this paper focuses on discussing the principal development in the church during that period.
The first development was the spread of Christianity outside Rome. This was facilitated by the diminishing of political boundaries, promoting the spread of Christianity to the regions that had never been under Rome (Kline par 2). Many people were converted into Christianity, something that further promoted its beliefs.
Monastic reformation is another key development that took place during the 6th century. The reforms resulted from various orders, such as Benedictine, and Mendicant Orders (Historyworld par 3). Most of the reforms focused on living under traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and emphasized preaching, charity works, and learning in the lonely monastery. This development was followed by the Crusades, which refer to the series of military disagreements that were conducted by the Christian Knights to defend themselves as well as the expansion of their domains. In fact, the wars were fought against the Islamic religion.
Reformation is another primary development that took place in 1600 AD. It connotes the 16th century religious, political, intellectual, as well as well as cultural disagreements that resulted in the division of the Catholic Church (History.Com par 1). The reformers advocated the religious and political redistribution of power in the hands of the bible. Martin Lurther spearheaded the reformation.
It is important to state that Christianity underwent several developments in the period discussed above. The spread of Christianity beyond Rome, Monastic reforms, and crusades, as well as the Protestant Reformation, are among the principal development that took place.
