In chapter 7, the author proposes that hedge words erode the speaker’s credibility. I was able to discover different kinds of hedge words and acknowledged the increase in their use in contemporary speech. The author attributes the increase in hedge word use to the increased tendency of individuals to speak as the audio versions of disclaimer and disclosure provisions. It is important to note that the author proposes some irritants in speech and advises individuals against utilizing the words in speech. Common words and phrases featured include thing, tweak, the “business”, jargon and different phrases or words that are overused in speech (Finder, 2013).
One imperative aspect mentioned in Chapter 8 is the need to increased understandability, particularly when speaking in public and to a group of financial and nonfinancial professionals. The author suggests that financial professionals should slow down when articulating financial issues to clients. It is crucial to note that financial issues are complex and should not be rushed (Finder, 2013). Hence, clients require time to process the different concepts that are explored and presented by financial professional. Moreover, the author suggests that financial professionals should demonstrate courtesy by pausing when presenting a speech or suggestions to clients.
In Chapter 9, the author explores the need to dress with respect when addressing subordinates, individuals that have a higher status and clients. The author notes that the client’s perception is directly influenced by the dressing of the business agent. The cheap and informal dressing has the tendency to annoy clients causing the agent to lose credibility and favor with the clients (Finder, 2013). Moreover, the author notes that dressing increases confidence and makes the agent presentable when addressing clients leaving a positive impression. Consequently, the author suggests that individuals should dress-down, eliminate “bling” from their dressing, wear sharp ties and demonstrate classic dressing in comparison to short fashion trends and fads.
