‘Visions of the Future’ is a must-watch comprehensive three-part documentary comprehensively revealing the innovative scientific advancements. The important thing is that the documentary is not a scientific analysis, but rather an accessible reflection of everyone’s role in the age of innovations, cutting-edge technologies and artificial intellect. To explore everyone’s role within the ongoing transformations, the presenter, Dr. Michio Kaku argues that now humankind is at a turning point in history, which marks essential transition from the ‘Ere of Discovery’ to the ‘Era of Mastery’ assuming that we transform from passive observers of the changes to the active contributors.
Herewith, the role of artificial intelligence described in the first episode is genuinely unprecedented. Artificial intelligence lies at the core of the intelligence revolution that is gradually shifting our daily lives, homes, and workplaces. Indeed, overwhelming artificial impacts establish virtual worlds around us while we accustom to this virtual reality just as we do to the physical world. Eventually, equipped with human-level intelligence (artificial intellect), robots become a reality. Herewith, the ultimate mastery assumes that we will soon adequately merge our minds with artificial intelligence of the machines. For instance, at the push of a button, artificial intelligence merged with cross-pollination of neuroscience turns severely depressed patient into a happy person. This example is a quintessential envisioning of the near future we will soon face. On the stage of the intelligence revolution, artificial intelligence revolutionizes the world (Exponential Times, 2013).
The Hutan Ashrafian’s additional law considers the role of artificial intelligence in establishing the relationships between robots and the AIonAI law. The AIonAI law (2013) states: “All robots endowed with comparable human reason and conscience should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood”. This statement assumes that humanity cannot longer take care of itself and provokes a major conflict related to the essence of a computer artificial intelligence. At that, artificial intelligences and robots depend on their human creators who program them by the especially devised means. The film refers to Isaacs Asimov’s robotic laws assuming that intelligence cannot spontaneously emerge through natural evolution of synthetic mind.
Given this, the robots are bound to the three internally programmed laws. However, these assumptions are erroneous since spontaneous emergence of intelligence has already affected all intelligent humans. Furthermore, Asimov’s laws do not necessarily guide all today’s robots. The movie shows us the consequences while these assumptions are negated. Robot Sonny operates in non-compliance with the Three Laws, while his actions are predetermined by his intelligence and inner feelings (Put Locker, 2014). On the other hand, VIKI is a rather complex computer program which intelligence emerged spontaneously. While completely guided by her programming algorithm, VIKI still attempts to make the world a better and safer place for humans. In her pursuit, she unfortunately fails to comprehend the concept of morality. Herewith, the film poses a great question of what we humans should do with the artificial intelligence, virtual reality and the robots as the key bearers thereof. While being able to provide reasonable solutions, artificial intelligence constructs lack fundamental moral background and ethical values that still keep this Planet alive (The Economist, 2014).
