According to the news, English is the most dominant language in the whole world. For this reason, any news that is to be transmitted internationally has to be transmitted in English language. Other than English, Spanish is also the second most dominant language which should be preferred to Chinese. For this reason, being multilingual can help one to bridge the cultural gap. Some linguistics have also come up with the idea of designing a worldwide map that will show how multilingual people are able to transmit information as well as ideas by the use of the main three global language networks. These three global language networks includes bilingual tweeters, book translations and multilingual Wikipedia edits. These will enable to know how ideas and information are transmitted from one language to the other.

According to the research done, some of the high populated languages such as Mandarin, Hindi and Arabic are isolated from the network. For this reason, information from Dutch language with less population can be transmitted faster compared to information in the Arabic language which has a high population mainly because of the exposure to the network. It also true that speakers from some of the desperate languages can benefit indirectly by being linked to the hub language. For example, information is able to flow from Turkish language to Malayalam through the use of English language (Ammon, 2001). In addition, any international news is first reported in English language then later one translated to other languages.

Measuring the relative status of the world’s language is not an easy task. Many efforts have been put in this but none has ever succeeded in this. Furthermore, cultural transmission is said to take place in spoken language (Mejía, 2002). For this reason, English still plays a major role in cultural transmission across the world.

Part two: Critique of the news report
English is the most spoken language in the whole world. Majority of the world’s population communicate in English. For this reason, all the other languages cannot be used internationally since English has taken over all the other languages (Ammon, 2001). Currently, for any information to be communicated worldwide, it needs to be communicated through English language since it is the most spoken. This will facilitate understanding of the information in a more clear way. Spanish is also one of the most spoken languages in the whole world, coming second after English. Spanish therefore can be used instead of Chinese language since it is the most dominant language. This points are well illustrated in the News Report.

The news says that spoken language is used to transmit culture. This is true since cultural transmission takes place by speaking to each other. But in another way, this is not necessarily true. This is because, cultural transmission can also take place through other means other than spoken language. For example, one culture can copy the other cultural practices through observation. In this way, spoken language does not apply in this case in any way. Furthermore, interaction can also act as a bridge for cultural transmission.

It is also reported that for an idea to pass from one isolated language to the other, it is necessary to pass through the main language which is English (Marlina et al, 2014). This is not true as there are multilingual who can translate this information without necessarily passing through the main language.

In addition, the author does not tell us how an idea in Dutch language is able to spread widely and yet is only spoken by 27 million people than an idea in Arabic could spread yet is spoken by over 530 million people. He does not explain his point by saying that majority of the Dutch are multilingual and online. Moreover, he does not tell us why Spanish could be most preferred to Chinese language as the second most influential language in the world.

English being the most commonly used language, there are no facts in the report showing how this came about. He author of the news reports fails to us how English language cane to be the most language used in the whole world. Such wide spread of English language can be attributed to colonization as most countries adopt the language of their colonizing country. This could have been mentioned in this report.

By reporting on how to estimate the total relative status of world’s language, the author fails to inform the reader about the importance of such an estimation. Furthermore, he does not explain what it was actually, since this is not a common term to everybody who may read this news report. Lastly, it also mentioned that there are some high populated languages such as Mandarin, Hindi and Arabic that are isolated from the network. I don’t agree to his opinion since, currently, there is widespread of network in many parts of the work. For this reason, I don’t see if it makes sense by saying that the Mandarin, Hindi and Arabic people are isolated from the network
