Give a brief overview of fashion and social impact.
Fashion entails a part of human experience and an industry by its own in every country. It plays a bigger role in influencing human culture in terms of clothing, nutrition, and influence on traditional norms in a given society. In today’s society, social interaction has been influenced by fashion. Clothing has influenced social identity; both signaled and perceived, cognitive processes, romantic success, employment outcomes among others (Yabroff, 2007). Approximately, 25% of American youths are driven by fashion, specifically the fashionable outfits and extreme passion in color matching. Over 90% of all potential employees are concerned about the clothing style of their employees (Gray et al. 2014). Over 30% of young Americans would choose to win Top Model than a Nobel Peace Prize. Approximately, 50% of female teens in US have retarded nutritional behavior and disorders brought by simulated fashions in various celebrities’ lifestyles. Lastly, a substantial portion of the college population from the urban environment has attributed fashion to thinness and body image satisfaction (Yabroff, 2007).

Discussion of the history of fashion and social impact
Many scholars have focused on the impact of fashion on the social platform of the American society. Many contemporary women have been influenced by fashion magazines as they try to simulate different behaviors by particular celebrities. The exposure of these magazines in the college students has had adverse social effects especially with clothing, dietary behavior and the body image (Yabroff, 2007). Slender body has been appreciated to be the target by such a population leading to deteriorating female body perception by the societal culture. This indicates that they have to monitor their eating habits and patterns to conform to such an aspect (Yabroff, 2007).

This has led to increased nutritional and eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Various fashion shows have contributed to this including Miss American Pageant, America’s Next Top Model and Slim Possible. Over 90% of potential employers are concerned with clothing of new employees in seeking vacancies (Gray et al. 2014). At most 20% of youths, have lost jobs, as a result of, poor dressing. Color matching and controversies have been the talk among the American youths. The “Chasing Beauty 2013,” An American Fashion documentary reveals how youths have deviated from Abercrombie to shirtless and the adverse role of modeling and beauty experts in the society (Baker, 2013).

Application of Conflict Theory
Social conflict theory argues that a society bears social classes that differ in their material amounts, as well as, non-material resources. The richer groups have a strong influence on the less powered groups. Knowledge in this context is an essential resource among the society. Social evolution and westernization have influenced social conflicts in various social aspects; fashion included. The westernized culture has brought the fashion conflict against the American culture at the mid-21st century. For instance, the female college students involved in beauty fashion modeling have a deviant perspective of both dressing and nutrition as compared to non-participating population. Moreover, 25% of all nutritional and eating disorders reported have been associated with female ladies who simulate westernized lifestyle (Bartos & Wehr, 2002).

Application of the Functionalist Theory
The functionalist theory gives an accurate account of fashion changes until 1960’s. It is the work of Emile Durkheim who explains how social order in a society is achieved and various tactics the society uses to ascertain this. This theory explains how social interaction within global platforms has influenced fashion in US. In addition, new trends are being initiated by small ethnic groups within a given society, lower class, as well as, minority racial groups. For instance, prominent designers and celebrities are part of minority groups that have a great impact on fashion styles in America. They have impacted on fashion cycles ranging from mitumba to Chinese fashion designs (Isajiw, 1998).
