The Novel “1984” concerns a man known as Winston who is frustrated by the rigid oppression and control of a Party that prohibits freedom of thought, individuality expression, and sex. Winston does not like the party, and he has a diary which he purchased illegally in which he writes criminal thoughts (Orwell 1). The story contains several themes, one of them being psychological manipulation. Orwell contends that the party beverages the citizens who are its subjects with some mental stimuli that are designed more to overwhelm the psychological capacity of the people’s independent thoughts.

There is a massive telescreen in each of the people’s room that monitors the behavior of the people in every single place they go. “The people are always reminded that they are being watched by the big brother” (Orwell 2). That is some form of psychological manipulation where people’s thoughts are governed by the party. Additionally, they encourage and brainwash children to spy and report on their parents and report any form of disloyalty they witness to the party (Orwell, 2). They force people to suppress their desires when it comes to sex and treating it as a mere procreative duty that has its purpose on creating new members of the Party (Orwell 1).

In the Current world, the psychological manipulation as Roussos (1) claims is being practiced in the United States where Donald Trump managed to manipulate the American citizens before the presidential elections. “He used the approach of system threat where he used methods that have been drawn from social psychology where he persuaded the people to believe that the society they feel is stable and fair, has an uncertain and dark future” (Roussos 1). The form of psychological manipulation here is less restrictive unlike the one portrayed in 1984 novel. “The manipulation used by Trump is said to have induced uncertainty as well as fear and may influence the behavior of many people, and that was what ultimately won him the Presidency” (Roussos 1).
